Mrs. Maya Chaliha Das, formerly of Bedford Massachusetts died on November 8, 2016 of heart failure in Seal Beach California. at the age of 91. She and her husband Dilip Kumar Das resided in Bedford from 1955 until 2009. Mrs. Das was born on September 11, 1925 on a tea-garden in Sibsagar, Assam, a province of India. She was the oldest daughter of a tea-plantation owner and industrialist, Jadav Prasad Chaliha, who was active in the India Independence Movement. When she was 9 years old she met Mahatma Gandhi.
She received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Benares Hindu University in 1944 at the age of 19. In 1945, at the end of World War II she married Dilip, who had served with the US Army in Burma, and they traveled by troop ship to the United States. She eventually became a naturalized citizen. After Dilip received his Ph. D. from Notre Dame University in South Bend Indiana, they moved to Massachusetts, and settled in Bedford.
She obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston University, in a program that educated older students. She was hired by the Reading Public School District, in Reading Massachusetts. She taught the 3rd and 4th grades, as well as computer skills classes, at the Pearl Street School until her retirement.
Mrs. Das was an avid gardener and tennis player. She and her husband were founding members of The Wedgwood Club in Bedford Massachusetts in 1959. She leaves behind two children, Dr. Naomi Neufeld of Pacific Palisades California, and Dr. Phil Das of Long Beach California, as well as 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She will be missed by all for her kindness and gentility.
