Joseph Junior Shumaker, known to friends and family as Jim, age 85, passed in his sleep at the Cimarron Nursing Center in Kingfisher, Oklahoma early Monday morning, September 2, 2013. Formally of Garden Grove, Calif., he moved to Oklahoma in 2007 to live with his daughter and her family.
A private celebration of his life took place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Funeral services will be held graveside at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 16, 2013 at Westminster Memorial Park in Westminster, Calif. where he will be buried next to his wife, Eve.
He was an only child, born June 13, 1928 to Walter James and Georgia Ann Shumaker in Fairmont, West Virginia. He worked for the Department of the Navy at the Puget Sound Navy Yard in Bremerton, Washington just prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corp at the age of 17. He is a World War II veteran.
He married Eva Marie Corrigan of Anaheim, Calif. on August 21, 1948. His proudest accomplishments were his wife, his children, his home, and his job. He loved living in California. He was a great camper, taking his family on annual vacations to Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks. In later years, he and Eve made daily trips to Huntington Beach to take walks on the pier. He retired from Johns Manville which was a manufacturer of the underground water pipes used to supply water to homes and businesses in a growing Southern California. He was promoted to foreman having oversight of 306 employees. He obtained his high school diploma when he was 42 years old. In his retirement years, he was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, cared for his elderly mother, nurtured his grandchildren, and took care of his wife and youngest son during their prolonged illnesses.
Immediate survivors include his son Robert James Shumaker and wife Ernestine of North Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter Kathryn Ann Hottel and husband Tom of Oklahoma City, Ok.; Daughter-in-law Jamie Shumaker of Cypress, Ca.; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eve and a son, David Allen Shumaker.
