On the sunny morning of September 28, Jeanne Wise Bauer died just a few days short of her 94th birthday. Jeanne was one of the famous Wise family, which included, Dorothy, Marjorie, Mary, Helen, and their equally dynamic younger brother, Frederic and his wife Dorothy Wagner Wise. (Dorothy is carrying the legendary legacy and living in Park Estates).
Jeanne, was part of the fabric of extra special lives to which Jeanne brought her devotion to life, her church and her very special family; her husband, Paul (deceased), her son Paul, her daughter Suzanne, her loving grandchildren, Ryan, Kai, Mary Anne and her husband Andy Orr and two great grandchildren, Kyla Mayfield and McKenzie Orr.
Arriving in Long Beach from Lake City, Minnesota with her parents, Theresa and Frederic (Peg and Fred) Wise in 1924, Jeanne, at her very young age, brought all the sensibilities of Middle America to the burgeoning west coast.
Indeed, from volunteer activities during World War II to working in the advertising department of the Long Beach Press Telegram, Jeanne excelled in being sure that everyone around her was in her circle of importance. And, her circle was wide and diverse to include the Bachelorettes of Long Beach, the Jr. League of Long Beach to one of her favorite endeavors “Meals on Wheels”.
Jeanne’s early years in Long Beach often focused on the beach with friends and family and Wilson High School and the Pacific Coast Club where she often danced the night away. During the War years she and her family often entertained war weary soldiers and sailors at their ample home on Loma Avenue with its very large rear garden. It was here that she met and then married the love of her life, her husband, Paul. Together they raised a lovely family and enjoyed the very early years of Disney Land where Paul was one of the original executives of the park which at that time was located among orange groves!
In later years Jeanne loved to cruise, especially to the islands, Mexico and Alaska. But, even in those leisurely days she made sure that “Meals on Wheels” was carrying on. Her Roman Catholic devotion carried her through some difficult “health” days with her mother-in-law, Inez and her husband Paul. Indeed, her faith sustained her mightily.
Jeanne will be long remembered by her treasured family and friends for her keen interest in all around her and her gentle touch. Memorial contributions may be given in her name to the charity of your choice. Jeanne’s funeral mass will be on October 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church at Broadway and Livingstone Drive, Long Beach, California.
