It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Hannah Nicholas Gough, born February 27, 1937 in Long Beach, California. Daughter of Clifton Charles and Christina Paterson Nicholas. Hannah was an incredible woman, full of life, love, and laughter. She was a loving wife to William Gough, and a devoted mother to sons Nick (granddaughters Sarah, Meghan, Destiny, Isabel, and Victoria) and David (grandson Johnathan). She was also a beloved sister to Mary Stockard.
Hannah’s entire life story unfolded in Long Beach. Her personality was shaped by the time she spent with her grandparents Ottis and Florence Nicholas. She attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School before pursuing Early Education at Cal State Long Beach. She took immense pride in being a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. It was during these formative years that she crossed paths with her husband, William Gough, a fellow member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. United on June 15, 1957, their marriage spanned an inspiring 65 years.
In her professional journey, Hannah's impact as an educator shone brightly within the Long Beach Unified School District for over three decades, where she dedicated her life to special education. Engaged with her community, Hannah was a vital presence in various clubs and organizations, including the Children’s Benefit League of Long Beach, Long Beach District PEO Reciprocity Bureau, Children’s Dental Clinic, and Delta Zeta Alumnae. Among these endeavors, the Children’s Benefit League held a special place in her heart, with Hannah serving as its president from 2001 to 2004 and continuing as a lifelong member.
Hannah, affectionately known as "haha Hannah," was renowned for her infectious laughter that could light up any room. She embodied leadership, community advocacy, and gracious hospitality. An enthusiastic bridge player, gardener, and entertainer, her absence will be profoundly felt by family and friends alike. As we reflect on our treasured memories, we recall scenic boat rides to Catalina, the warmth she infused into holiday gatherings, and the enduring image of her seated at the kitchen table, writing heartfelt letters to those she held dear.
In lieu of floral tributes, the family kindly requests donations be directed to the Children’s Benefit League of Long Beach. May the legacy of Hannah Nicholas Gough live on; a testament to a life well lived, rich with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to community.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.westminstermemorial.net for the Gough family.
