Doctor Chinh Van Huynh better known as Trung Chinh passed away peacefully after a long battle with buccal cancer. He died with as much determination as he has lived. He has always commanded a huge presence. Whether that be while performing on stage to an audience of a thousand people or leading a board meeting at his nonprofit organization to build a memorial for his fallen comrades in the South Vietnamese Marines. He was a generous friend, caring and sacrificing. He was strict but fair and instilled in all who knew him a love for helping others. He was a firm believer that if one was good, then ten was better. Especially when purchasing toothpaste or toilet paper.
Born January 4, 1943, in My Tho, Vietnam to Le Van Sy and Huynh Thi Nghiem. He would be the youngest child after two older brothers, Huynh Van Vang and Huynh Van Mai. He was an average student until his second year of high school. Then he began to excel and was admitted to the medical program at Saigon Medical School. He met the love of his life, Kim (Phuong Nguyen) Huynh in 1968 and they were married on February 18, 1969. The couple welcomed their first child in 1970 and like clockwork welcomed another child every 3 years until 1979. He had just completed medical school when he began his military career fighting alongside American troops during the Vietnam War. After the war, he was sent to a reeducation camp and released a year later. He knew there would not be a future for his family in Vietnam and began planning to secretly leave the country. The family was one of the lucky boat people that eventually made it to America. Once here, he studied and passed his licensing exams and moved the family to Oklahoma City in 1986. There he served as a physician and later medical director for the Norman Veterans Center. But his passion was in serving his Vietnamese community. He opened an after-hours private practice in 1988. He continued to work both jobs until all the kids were graduated from college. Then he decided to hang up his boots and trade them for year-round 70-degree weather in a move to California in 2004. Here he grew a very successful private practice in Westminster until he became ill.
Initially, Bac Si Chinh conquered cancer in 2023 after surgery and 40 rounds of radiation. Once given a clean bill of health, he returned to working two days a week at his practice. His patients and staff were ecstatic for his return. It would be 6 months later when he noticed another lesion in his mouth and knew the cancer had returned. Even then, Bac Si Chinh was willing to continue fighting. With renewed determination, he agreed to a second surgery and began immunotherapy visits. It was not until a tracheostomy was required that things began to go downhill. He was admitted to the ICU due to complications but was stabilized after one week. All his children flew to be by his side, and it was there that they were given the news as a family that the cancer was too aggressive and was not responding to treatment. As when confronted with any adversity, he faced it head on. Now unable to talk, he communicated through writing. His main concerns were for his wife and family when he was gone, making sure that everyone was cared for. He proceeded to command his passing and funeral arrangements with as much detail as a general commanding troops. If you knew him, you would not expect anything less.
In 1999, he was graced with his first grandchild. He proceeded to be called grandpa by 16 more--the youngest of which was born this past year before he was hospitalized. He is survived in death by his wife Kim Phuong Nguyen Huynh, his four children Diane (Bernard) Lai, Khoi (Samantha) Huynh, Tina (Garth Price) Huynh, Viet (Jennifer) Huynh; his grandchildren Sydney, Nicholas, Julian, Justin, Jaden, Jorden, Joshua, Jared, Jace, Jazlyn, Jaxon, Jorge, Trystan, Xandri, Brayden, Skyler, Kendal, Raegan, and Emerick; his sisters in law Lan Nguyen, Phuong Bich Thi Nguyen, Hue (An) Nguyen, Binh (Nghia) Nguyen; several nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren.
Kim Phuong honored her vows and set an incredible example to her children on what love is. In life, she chose to work tirelessly by her husband’s side at his family practice. In sickness and in health, she tended to her best friend until his last breath.
