Antonio "Tony" Armenta Mendez of Westminster, California passed away on June 15, 2017. A visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm in the Westminster Memorial Park Carolina Chapel. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11:00 am at Westminster Memorial Park. Tony was born in Long Beach, CA to Rumalda and John Mendez on April 1, 1922. He married Mary Elsa Villarreal. He was a veteran of World War II, earned the rank of sergeant, was wounded and received, the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and the Belgium Croix de Guerre recognizing bravery and military virtue on the battlefield.
He enjoyed playing baseball and handball throughout his life and received numerous athletic awards. he was an active member in the Latin American Club and Amigos Club in Long Beach, CA and the United Mexican American Veterans Association (UMAVA) based in Orange CA.
Tony is survived by his wife of 69 years, Elsa Mendez: his sister Francis Graft: his 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Tony was preceded in death by his brother, Manuel Mendez.
