Dr. Norwood Oakley Hill's earthly journey peacefully concluded in the early morning hours of May 24, 2024, at the age of 88. A cherished Decatur, Texas resident, Norwood passed away in Newbury Park, California, in the comforting presence of his beloved girlfriend, Pat McDade, with whom he shared dreams of a future together in Texas. Born on January 13, 1936, to Joseph and Isobel Hill, he was one of five siblings.
Norwood's life was marked by a profound passion for living. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas, and pursued higher education at Yale University, followed by Baylor Medical School, where he honed his gift for healing.
In 1954, he entered into a lifelong partnership with his beloved Sarah Steel, a bond that endured six decades until her passing in 2015. Together, they navigated life's ups and downs, raising a family and leaving behind a legacy of love that will transcend generations. Norwood's professional journey was characterized by his commitment to pioneering medical research, particularly in cancer and blood-related diseases. His tenure at Wadley Institutes of Molecular Medicine reflected a familial dedication to healing, mirroring his father's legacy. Norwood served as President and board member of the American Association of Blood Banks and authored numerous peer-reviewed articles on blood-related diseases. Notably, he initiated the first US manufacturing of Interferon during his time at Wadley Research. His medical journey is chronicled in his book, “Blood and Betrayal: The Untold History”.
Norwood's adventurous spirit led him to explore every corner of the globe, from bustling continents to the icy expanse of Antarctica, aboard an icebreaker ship. Yet, amidst his worldly pursuits, he remained devoted to his family, embodying the roles of a loving son, sibling, father, and grandfather. Known for his acts of kindness, such as leaving generous tips for struggling college students working as waiters or waitresses, Norwood's warmth and wisdom touched countless lives, illuminating a world often clouded by hardship.
Preceded in death by his beloved Sarah and their eldest son, David Oakley Hill, Norwood's spirit lives on in the hearts of his children and grandchildren: Lawrence Hill and his wife Cathleen, Scott Hill and his wife Patricia, and Jennifer Hill Haggerty and her husband John, along with their children, Jessica, Xie, Lindsay, Katie, Jack, and Archie. He is also survived by his siblings Robert Hill, Patricia Lindsey, Barbara Lanius, and Joseph Hill.
Norwood's infectious laughter will resonate in the memories of all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to a life brimming with richness, we honor the profound impact he made on our lives and our world. Godspeed, dear Norwood.
