Born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 16, 1928, Mary was the second of four children. After graduating from high school, Mary married the love of her life, John Puopolo, on October 12, 1953. The couple had two children, David who currently resides in Oak Park, California and Jane who lives in Los Angeles, California.
In 1957, John and Mary moved to North Andover, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. John, an architect, designed and built their dream house by renovating a 150-year-old barn. The house has been featured in several design magazines. They resided in the home for over 35 years.
In 1967, John was named Vice President of Boston-based Sheraton Design and Development, Inc. John was responsible for building hotels around the world. When he was travelling, Mary held down the fort. She was a devoted mother and homemaker. In addition to caring for her children, Mary had many close friends who would stop over for coffee and conversation. These friendships lasted throughout her life. She was a caring and compassionate companion. People gravitated to her for her wisdom and kindness.
In addition to caring for her children and maintaining multiple friendships, Mary was a gracious and skilled hostess. She held numerous parties and social events for both John’s business associates and their friends. She was talented as a cook and made savory Sicilian and Italian foods. She took great pride in presentation and in seeing to the needs of her guests. Mary was also an accomplished artist. All of her work was done in water color. Her subjects were diverse in range, covering people, buildings, landscapes and various activities.
In 1990, John retired and they moved to Westlake Village, California. In. addition to renovating and decorating their house, they developed many new friendships and travelled the state. Mary joined several local social and humanitarian groups including Newcomers, the Westlake Yacht Club, a thrift shop whose proceeds supported cancer patients, and a book club. It was through these local groups that Mary cultivated new and lasting friendships.
Mary was a devoted wife to John. They were best friends and constant companions. They shared a love of art, architecture, all things Italian, and family. Mary loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She met her great-granddaughter over the holidays for the first time. Family and friends alike will miss her charm, elegance, and grace.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Josephine Maio of Boston, Massachusetts and her brother Joe Maio of Winchester, Massachusetts. Mary will be deeply missed by her loving son, David, and her daughter-in-law Mindy, her daughter, Jane, her grandchildren Michael of Oak Park, California and Lauren, her husband Nick and their daughter, Marley Wheaton of Stevensville, Maryland, as well as her brother and sister-in-law Frank and Shaleiza Maio of Bradenton, Florida and her brother and sister-in-law Steve and Dorothy Maio of Wakefield, Massachusetts.
Services will be held on Tuesday, May 9th at 2:30 pm at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village, CA.
