Born in Medford, Massachusetts on July 25, 1927, John was the oldest of four children. After graduating from high school, John enlisted in the Army in 1945 and rose to the rank of Sergeant. After he completed his term with the Army, John attended the Wentworth Institute of Design, MIT and the Boston Architectural Center. John married the beautiful Mary Constance Maio of Boston, Massachusetts on October 12, 1953. The couple had two children, David who currently resides in Oak Park, California, and Jane who lives in Los Angeles. John and Mary moved to North Andover, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. John designed and built their dream house by renovating an old barn. The house has been featured in several design magazines. The family resided in the home for over 35 years.
In 1967, John was named Vice President of Boston based Sheraton Design and Development, Inc. The company was responsible for the development, engineering and design of Sheraton hotels, motels, restaurants and their affiliated institutions. During his 16 years at Sheraton, John oversaw development of many projects and hotels not only domestically but also in Canada, Israel, Jamaica, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Kuwait, Iran, Egypt, Aruba, the Philippines, Malta, and Thailand.
Though he traveled extensively, John always made time for his family. He was a loving and involved Dad. He never missed a football game, a school play or a holiday.
In 1970 John founded Group One, Inc., an architectural design and development corporation. This Boston based firm designed and built hotels, motels, and restaurants in the New England area. The firm grew to be very successful and allowed John to be closer to home after many years of travel.
In 1990, John decided to retire and moved his family to Westlake Village, California. For the next 22 years, John and Mary enjoyed the California good life. John spent a lot of time gardening and enjoying the warm weather. John and Mary travelled the state and made many new friends. John also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren Michael and Lauren, and he made weekly trips to Los Angeles to visit his daughter, Jane.
John was a man of many admirable qualities. He was honest, loyal, capable, handy and he had a real sense of humor. He loved all the Boston area sports teams, particularly the Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox.
Above all, John was a family man. He was a best friend to his wife Mary and her constant companion. He was devoted to his children and grandchildren. He was truly one of a kind.
John was preceded in death by his parents Dominic and Olympia Puopolo of Quincy, Massachusetts and his sister Phyllis Doherty of Stoughton, Massachusetts.
John will be deeply missed by his loving wife Mary of 59 years, his son David, his daughter Jane, his grandchildren Michael and Lauren, his daughter-in-law Mindy, his brother Edward of Canton, Massachusetts, and his sister Theresa of Holbrook, Massachusetts as well as by many nieces and nephews in the Boston area.
The family is extremely grateful to the ICU staff at Los Robles Medical Center for their compassionate care of John over the past two months.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30PM at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks-Griffin Memorial Park, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village, CA 91362.
