John B. “Jack” Munson, 79, of Westlake Village, passed away at home on November 27th. Jack was born on May 1, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to Catherine and Conn Backus. His father died when he was a young boy, and Jack was later adopted by his mother’s second husband, Mark Frame Munson. In 1955, Jack graduated from Knox College where he met his wife, Anne Lorraine Cooper, who graduated in 1957. Jack served in the Army from 1955-1957. Anne & Jack wed on July 6, 1957.
The couple moved to Santa Monica, California where Jack started as a scientific computer programmer at System Development Corporation, an information processing systems company, originally a division of Rand Corporation. Jack rose to the office of corporate vice president of technical operations. In 1984, Jack & Anne moved to Houston, Texas where Jack, as vice president and general manager of the Unisys Corporation space systems division, managed all the computer systems in flight operations for the space shuttle.
Jack was frequently honored for his pioneering work in the software engineering industry, including promotion to the grade of Fellow in IEEE, listing in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World, a NATO Certificate of Appreciation, an Air Force exceptional civilian service medal, and a Navy superior public service medal for his contribution to the F-14D program. In 1994, Jack was selected and inducted into the National Management Association’s Management Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio.
Jack is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anne Cooper Munson; children, David Bruce Munson (Arlene) and Sharon Anne Munson Swanson (Todd); grandchildren, Maxwell Conn and Francesca Simone Munson, Jennifer Nicole Swanson Stafford (Ronnie), and Steven Todd Swanson; and great grandchildren, Lily Aurora and Ella Paige Stafford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Jack's name, to the Buena Vista Butterfly Foundation.
