She grew up at Gross Pointe, Michigan. Her father Charlton Henry Cowling moved his family to the Pacific Palisades, California in 1950 to become advertising manager for the radio station KMPC in Hollywood. It was there that Joan belonged to the St. Matthews Episcopal Church I the Pacific Palisades, where, in April of 1954, she met her future husband Norman Lewis Bayley at this church. She married Norman on August 14, 1954 in a ceremony performed by Reverend Father Carrie of the Saint Matthews Episcopal Church and became Mrs. Joan Marie Bayley. Joan has been a resident of Southern California ever since.
Joan was a homemaker; a kind and considerate mother that raised two beautiful girls, Sherri and Linda, and made sure they were educated. She belonged to the school’s PTA and was a school librarian. Also, in her spare time she was a member in good standing in the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi. She was blessed with three beautiful grandchildren born to Sherri Reinhart; Christopher, Travis, and Trevor. Christopher married Heather Campbell in September 2011, bringing a wonderful granddaughter to the family.
Joan was a vocalist, singing in church and was a member of the Mayflower Club in North Hollywood for twenty five years. She was also a talented organist and ballroom dancer with her husband Norman.
Joan passed away in her husband’s arms after suffering from a massive stroke on Monday, the 4th of June. She will be missed by all her family to our dying days. She will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Joan; wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother.
