With heavy hearts and sadness, we share the passing of Harold Hass of Westlake Village, CA. He left us quietly and quickly on Thursday, 12/02/2021 at the age of 93. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Born in 1928, Harold grew up in Oceanside, CA. As a young man he was always interested in boats and ships and spent his summers commercial fishing with his father during WW2 as well as a few years after. Throughout his Newport Harbor High School days, he was in the Sea Scouts and then joined the US Navy Reserves as he started college. He was called to serve as the Korean War began.
Before shipping off to Korea, he met a “cute little girl” named Joann at Balboa Beach. They corresponded for the two years he was away. Upon his return stateside in 1952, he and Joann were married. They moved to Laguna Beach and started their family.
The family moved to Alhambra as Harold returned to college. The family continued to grow. He graduated from Cal State LA with a degree in Engineering. Hired by Burrough’s Corp in Pasadena as a Mechanical Engineer he continued with the company when Burroughs moved to Thousand Oaks, CA in 1968.
Once rooted in Thousand Oaks, Harold enthusiastically boated and fished around the Channel Islands with family and friends and took all of his grandchildren deep-sea fishing. Every year he raised a beautiful garden of vegetables and flowers. He taught us all to fall in love with the Garden and the Sea, and entertained us all with his tales about boats, sailing, other wonderful stories of his life and adventures.
Most recently Harold has been actively involved with the Righteous Brothers Men’s Fellowship at Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Louella Hass, his brother, Robert Hass and his nephew, Daniel Anderson.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joann, daughters, Deborah (spouse Steve), Jeanine and Nicolette (spouse Bill), grandson Francis (spouse Lei Lei), granddaughters Maggie (spouse Theodore), Melissa (spouse Eric), Stephanie (spouse Daniel), Melanie, 8 great-grand children, and sister Betty Anderson.
Although 93 years old seems like a long life, those who knew Harold can’t help but think he left us too soon. Harold was full of life, energy, drive and purpose up to the very end. He lived his life with integrity, kindness and gentleness and was respected by everyone who met him. He passing has left a big hole in our hearts.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Physicians and Nurses at Los Robles Hospital Emergency Room and ICU for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in his final hours. A special warm thank you to our dear friend, Dr. Frank Dawson for his caring and the generosity of his time.
A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at Pierce Brothers Memorial Park, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village, CA 91362.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Harold’s honor to the Thousand Oaks Library through Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library at ftol.org/donations.
