Just learning of Professor Suh's passing–very belatedly. I have warm and deeply appreciative memories of his teaching from when I was a visiting schoal at UH and he allowed me to audit a class of his on Korean history. A terrific person and scholar.

Doctor Dae-Sook Suh, you and your achievements will be greatly missed by both your family and your academic world.  Your many books have undoubtedly been great contributions on which you worked so tirelessly as a life-long scholar.  

As a dedicated family man, your cherished memories will live in the hearts of your wife, sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren.  You were also a good friend to my beloved husband and to your other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law as well. 

For those who don’t know, you also enjoyed playing the piano and singing.  My dear husband and I had the pleasure of listening to you play and sing at our house many years ago. That was a fun and memorable time.  My, how time flies.

Uncle, you always made me laugh.  I remember every time you would start to tell us a story, we would all begin laughing in anticipation.  You would then say “what are you laughing at?  I haven’t even started my story”.   Then, you’d start to laugh.  Then we’d all laugh even more.  Then you’d finally tell us some silly story (like the never ending kooksoo noodle), and then we’d all be crying laughing! 

Thank you for being my loving uncle.   I will miss you so much. 

It has been an inspriation to my scholarly life the experiences we had back in Hawaii. Lately, your name rekindled in my study on North Korean language policy studies. I try to follow your footsteps of devotions in the North Korean research field even in a long distance behind.

I got to know Professor Suh in 1991-92 while starting on my own book at the East-West Center. He was most kind and generous and I relied on and cited his own work frequently in my own. We stayed in touch until sometime after his retirement in California. My sincere condolences to the family. I would be grateful if someone could send me details about his life for an obituary I'm writing for Asia Times (asiatimes.com), of which I am associate editor. I see one reference saying he was born in Hoeryong, which is in North Korea. Did he actually grow up in North Korea before moving to the U.S.? Is that how he got involved in studying the North? Did he relate any adventures inside the country? I should know all that but if I once knew it, I've forgotten.

You had always shown us an exemplary model as a great scholar who dedicates his full life for the development of unknown area of North Korean leadership and as a great professor who loves and cares his students in wholeheartedly.
