It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Carl Chia-Fong Hsieh, who departed this life on May 19, 2024, peacefully in San Luis Obispo, California, surrounded by loving family, at the age of 85. Born in Taiwan and a proud graduate of the National Taiwan University and Northwestern University, Carl led a wonderful, full life dedicated to family, kindness, honesty, hard work, and accomplishment. A respected Professor and Department Head of Architectural and Civil Engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for over 30 years, Carl was committed to educating and inspiring generations of engineers. His passion for teaching was complemented by his and his wife’s acumen in real estate and stock market investing, where he applied their knowledge and expertise to support and improve his community. Carl was a devoted husband of 62 years to his loving and wonderful wife, Shu-mei, father of four (Janet, Louis, Helen, and Christine), an amazing grandfather to eleven, and an expected great-grandfather to one due at the end of 2024. He cherished his family deeply and was known for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering support. His legacy is carried on by his loved ones, who will continue to honor his memory and practice safety, patience, a healthy lifestyle, and kindness to everyone, which were his favorite principles to live by. He is survived by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. His presence in their lives will be profoundly missed, and his influence will be felt for generations.
A funeral service to celebrate Carl's life will be held on May 31, 2024, at 10:00 am at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks-Griffin Memorial Park in Westlake Village, California. Professor Carl Chia-Fong Hsieh's life was a testament to the power of family, education, hard work, and love. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us all.
