Alfred was born in Bolton, MS on Feb. 11, 1933 to James Bernard and Elma Carr. He spent his childhood and young adulthood in MS. He attended Tougaloo College, subsequently receiving a Bachelor of Science degree with a Biology Major. From MS, he traveled to Chicago for further education. While there, he taught Science in elementary and high school.
Alfred came to CA in 1960 where he taught school in Compton and was later offered a position with the California Teachers Association working as a teachers' advocate for the Pasadena Teachers Assoc. He served as Executive Director of the Pasadena Education Association. He later took an assignment with the National Education Association in Washington, D.C., again as a teachers' advocate for teachers in all states. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Alfred and his wife came back to CA in 1988, settling first in the high desert. In 1995, they moved to Westlake Village and then to Thousand Oaks where they lived when he passed. Together, they enjoyed music, gardening, their family and friends and, in particular, pampering their toy poodle, Charley Brown.
Alfred will be greatly missed by his wife Grace; daughter, Cheryll Carr Handy (John Ray Sr.) of Pasadena, CA; son, Alfred Lomax Carr (Gayl Branum) of VA; grandchildren, Myles R. Cunningham III, Taylor Clar'El and Alfred James Carr; his first wife Ollie Ruth Carr, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sat., Apr. 26, 2014 at 10am at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks-Griffin Mortuary: 5600 Lindero Canyon Rd., Westlake Village, CA.
