Tuesday morning, December 10, 2013, Marjorie Nelson Myers passed peacefully. Often heard by those who knew her "The Lord works in strange ways" Marge also did it "her way" as she anxiously awaited the "planned" Thanksgiving with grandkids and Nelson Family and then again patiently and lovingly waited for all three of her children to come back to town simultaneously... Surrounded by Lyn, Lori, Moni, husband Leonard, brother, James, Dr. Ben and the love of her sister Karen, words of passage were spoken softly by a Sister of St. Pat's.
Marge was a child of Baytown, TX and came to Louisiana as a pioneering family of Maplewood. Eventually she chose Westlake to raise her children and live her life. Margie graduated from Sulphur High, attended Texas State College for Women, Louisiana State and McNeese. She earned five degrees- undergraduate, graduate and advanced. Her quest for knowledge was never ending... with a computer at hand and sources of knowledge surrounding her always. Marge's desire to retire was only overcome by her dedication to education. After having taught advanced math for 26 years at Westlake High and math for the trades at Sowela for 10 years, she went on to not only teach at Phelps Prison for another 10 years; but also, developed a program allowing an inmate’s education to follow them as they were relocated to different institutions until achievement of GED.
Margie was fascinated by the research of genealogy and was determined to make certain that this quest of ancestry was carried on. Her love of and for her family was known and felt by all including her surviving brothers and sister, James Nelson, Karen Nelson Jackson, Byron Nelson; children, Leonard Myers, Lorraine Myers Mann, Ramona Myers; grandchildren, James and Aryn Mann and Jaclyn, Taylor, Olivia and Jerod Myers Jones and her beloved husband, Leonard Myers. After 82 years in this world, Marjorie Lorraine will join her deceased parents, James Nelson and Hazel Renz Nelson.
Her greatest gift of all was her "Gift of Marge" which she gave to all. Thank You Marge! We will always hold that "silver lining" close to our hearts.
Her Memorial Service will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake. Visitation will be Saturday 12 noon until service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Educational Foundation “Girls Rising,” 2090 South Perkins Ferry Rd., Lake Charles, LA 70611. Every $50 sends a girl to school somewhere in the world.
