CORBETT, William James, (Jim) passed away peacefully in North Vancouver on October 9, 2014, at 93 years of age. He was the beloved husband of Vera for 60 years, who passed away in 2011. He is forever cherished by his children Bonnie and (Harvey), Dianne, Donna and (Al), Betty-Joan and (Lionel); grandchildren Adam and (Heather), Joel and (Kezia), Julien and (Megan), Camille and (Alvaro), Philippe and (Kelsy), Lindsay and (Casey), Karen and (Ian), Jimmy, Kristie and (Steve); and great-grandchildren Alyssa and Milo.
Jim was born in Plenty, Saskatchewan and graduated from the University of Toronto as a Medical Doctor in 1951. He and Vera raised their four daughters in North Vancouver. A respected General Practitioner on the North Shore, he was delighted to be awarded the GP of the Year Award in 1965. Keenly interested in the preservation of quality public medical care, he served as President of the BCMA in 1970, and was Lions’ Gate Hospital’s first Medical Director, from 1974 until his retirement in 1986.
Jim maintained a lifelong interest in learning, astonishing friends and family with his prodigious memory and knowledge of historical and current events. His children and grandchildren were the joy of his life. For his family, he was a mentor and a kind, truly benevolent patriarch.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Westerleigh , where he spent a very healthy and happy year, as well as to all those at the North Shore Hospice who eased his way through his final days.
At his request, a private family celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Friends are invited to honour Jim with a contribution to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, and to remember him while relaxing on the family bench - the most westerly one on the waterfront at Horseshoe Bay Park.
