October 11, 1944 – June 13, 2019
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sharon after a courageous battle with multiple systems atrophy (MSA). She passed away at Lions Gate Hospital after a sudden set-back. She was born and brought up in Flin Flon, Manitoba. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1966 and moved to Calgary to start work as a teacher. There she met Neil, and after an adventure filled year long trip to Europe and Morocco with her best friend Karen, she returned to Calgary to resume teaching and marry Neil on June 20, 1969. After another year Sharon and Neil undertook another trip to Expo 70 in Japan, traveling to India, Hong Kong, Nepal and eventually Australia where they stayed for a year, Sharon getting a job as the education officer at the Melbourne Zoo. Returning to Calgary via New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii she resumed teaching. After Neil got a job with the government, moves were made to Edmonton just as son Colin was born, then to Regina where daughter Erin was born. After a few years Neil changed jobs and the family moved to North Vancouver in 1979. Ever active Sharon stayed home to raise the children while organizing family and with others, neighborhood camping trips and still running Kilmarnock Day. After the children matured, she worked for the West Vancouver School District and the West Vancouver Municipal Employees Association. She also became the inveterate traveler visiting Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Peru, China, Vietnam, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, Egypt, East Africa, Jordan, Central America and the south west USA were among the many places she visited. She was a positive influence on many lives and the impact on those around her will be felt for many years.
Sharon is survived by her loving husband of 50 years Neil, son Colin, daughter Erin Maki and three grandsons, Chayton, Carson and Hunter, brother Don Mardis (Jeanette) and many friends and extended family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Highlands United Church, 3255 Edgemont Blvd, North Vancouver, B.C. on Friday July 5th at 2pm
