It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sarah MacKenzie (nee Lawler). Sarah is survived by her devoted husband of 13 years, Patrick Mackenzie, their sons Benjamin and James, parents Michael and Nellie Lawler, mother-in-law Dolores MacKenzie, brothers-in-law Donald and Michael, sisters-in-law Meg and Angela, and nieces and nephews Liam, Jack, Alison, Michael, and Matthew. Sarah was predeceased by her father-in-law Donald MacKenzie. Sarah also has many beloved cousins and extended family all over the world.
Born in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Sarah attended the University of British Columbia, receiving a degree in international relations, before moving to Toronto to study communications. She then moved to Ottawa, where she worked as a consultant before beginning her career in Indian and Northern Affairs with the Canadian government. It was in Ottawa she met Patrick and they began their life together, ultimately welcoming two wonderful children and moving back to North Vancouver. Sarah also loved to travel and spent extended time in France, Ireland, and Holland.
Sarah was remarkable for her commitment to family and her faith. She had an unmatched ability to draw people near with a kindness that brightened the lives of everyone she met. Sarah’s warmth, grace and courage created so many opportunities for joy with her family and friends.
The family is especially grateful to Fr. Augustine Obiwumma, Lisa Cormier, Ralf Hendriks, Drs. Anna Tinker, Sarah Finlayson, Mark Carey, Jennifer Walker, and their many colleagues at the BC Cancer Agency, St Paul’s, and Lion’s Gate Hospital, and Julie McAdam, Trish Rivers, and her many nurses for the kindness they showed during the most difficult moments.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 2nd at 11:00 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2725 Lonsdale Avenue in North Vancouver. A reception will follow at the Holy Trinity school gym. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in in honour of Sarah to the BC Cancer Foundation (bccancerfoundation.com), care of Dr. Mark Carey.
