Lorna passed away peacefully at home at 94 surrounded by family. She was predeceased 13 months earlier by Alex, her loving husband of 67 years. She is survived by son Malcolm, daughter Janet (MacQuarrie-Kent), son-in-law Duncan Kent, beloved granddaughters Emily and Lizzie, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lorna was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and moved to Vancouver at an early age with her parents Lorne and Vera Tweed. She graduated from UBC in 1942 with a BA and a teacher’s certificate. Alex went overseas to war while Lorna went to Prince George to teach school. After the war they married and started their family, moving to North Vancouver in 1950. Lorna later returned to UBC and earned a degree in librarianship. Several years later she was asked by the superintendent of schools to fill in temporarily at Argyle Secondary School and ended up staying there until she retired. Lorna was active in St. Andrews United Church, The University Women’s Club and the NS Retired Teachers’ Association. She curled, square danced, played bridge and cribbage, and was a master knitter. Alex and Lorna travelled the world making lifelong friends wherever they went. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends, and her kindness and generosity to all she met. Many thanks to Dr. Haaf and to the wonderful caregivers who helped her through the last year of her life – especially Rosie, Cora and Risalee. A celebration of Lorna’s life will be held Saturday, July 12, at 2:00 pm at St. Andrews United Church, 1044 St. George's Avenue, North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, 231 East 15th Street, North Vancouver, BC, V7L 2L7.
