HARVEY, Barbara Jean (Bonnick) passed away peacefully on June 6, 2011 after a brief time in the Palliative Care Unit of Lion’s Gate Hospital. Barb enjoyed everyone one of her 86 plus years. Born in Toronto, raised in Winnipeg, Barb met and married her only love, Harold S. Harvey (Hy) in 1946 after she had graduated from nursing. After 58 years of marriage, Hy predeceased Barb in 2005. She is survived by her loving sons, Jeff and John and her daughter in law, Trudyann. Her four grandchildren, Dani, Matt, Max and Mike will miss their Nana.
In 1966 Barb moved with her family to West Vancouver where she re-invented herself from nurse/mother to bookseller. Starting as a part time clerk with Evelyn DeMille Books in Park Royal, Barb became the province wide manager for W.H. Smith Books in the 1980s.
She retired with Hy to Sechelt in 1982 but never stopped giving of herself. She volunteered tirelessly in the community and was the chairperson of St. Mary’s Hospital in the 1990s. She continued on at St Mary’s in various capacities until her illness prevented further service.
In addition to her family, Barb will be missed by all her Sechelt friends including her bridge group, former golfing partners and a band of adventurers self titled the “Merry Widows”. Barb had planned cruise to Alaska with her friend, Harry Woodman, for later in June but her health didn’t cooperate. She will be missed by all.
A special thanks from the Harvey’s to the care providers at Lion’s Gate Palliative Care, your caring and compassion provided strength during a difficult time.
A private celebration of Barb’s life is planned for later in the month. If friends so desire donations may be made to the B.C. Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
