Shirley Ross Larsen, a man of timeless charm, quiet strength, and unwavering love, passed away peacefully at his home on December 28th. Born on May 5, 1934, in his family’s home in Fairview, Utah, he was the beloved son of James Peter Larsen and Anna Violet Johnson Larsen.
Shirley spent his childhood helping on the family farm, forming a close bond with his Grandpa Johnson. His love for animals, especially dogs, began at an early age. It was Shirley’s job to prepare the family dogs to herd sheep—a task he took on with care and devotion. This deep love for animals lasted his entire life, highlighted by his special bond with his dog, Isaac, who became his inseparable comrade.
At 16, Shirley and his family moved to Magna, Utah, where he later worked for the Kennecott Smelter. His life took an unexpected turn while working at the Tooele Army Depot, where he met Adena Rydalch. She introduced him to her daughter, Ruby Rydalch, who soon went on to become his forever companion. Shirley and Ruby were married. That marriage was later solemnized on January 17, 1992, in the Jordan River Temple. They went on to share a beautiful life together, raising five children, Julie (Pepe) Renteria, Wallace (Diane) Larsen, James Larsen, Scott Larsen and Anna (Kelly) Goodfellow. Then welcoming 15 grandchildren and eventually cherishing 33 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was not just a family man but also a skilled carpenter and craftsman. Him and His father built many homes around the Salt Lake Valley. While working for Wasatch Electric he worked on Cell Towers. It was always fun to ride with him because he would show you all of them. He was very proud of the work he had done. After his Retirement from Wasatch Electric, he joined his sons at Larsen Electric and could still be found at work up until his death. He enjoyed working with his family. He could often be found fixing things, building treasures for his family, or enjoying the serenity of the mountains. His rugged yet loving nature made him a true mountain man at heart. He had a great sense of humor, always quick with a wink or a joke that made everyone around him feel special. Shirley loved to share his favorite things with his grandchildren some of the most prominent things were his love for a classic western, all kinds of music and of course it was rare to find him without an iced Coca-Cola. His love and charm were timeless, making everyone in his presence feel truly seen and cherished.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and humor, as well as a family who will always remember his playful winks and warm presence. Remembering his beautiful smile and twinkle in his eyes will be something that will help us remember his fun and loving sense of humor. You knew you were loved if he ever teased you while sharing his big smile.
