Shirley passed quietly in the comfort of her home; Most of her family were able to visit with her prior to her passing. She is preceded in death by her parents Lucile and Elmer Layton, a brother Tim Layton, three husbands, and many others who have waited in anticipation for her homecoming. It is believed that her homecoming is a sweet relief from illness and the cares of this mortal existence; And a happy reunion with family, friends, and loved ones who have gone on before. Survived by children Michael Shrewsbury, Laurel Nelson, Daniel (Annette) Shrewsbury, Kenneth Shrewsbury, Robyn (Scott) Yocum, Kimberly (Gary) Smith, Brian (Elain) Shrewsbury. Brothers Don (Carma) Layton, George (Molly) Layton, Sister in law Olive Layton. 36 Grandchildren, 51 Great-Grandchildren, and 3 Great, Great-Grandchildren.
Shirley was a friend to many people and had hundreds of acquaintances, many of hwom she met during her career of 17 years as a UTA bus driver which she was very proud of. She had amazing artistic talents and was accomplished as a seamstress, artist, oil painter, ceramics creator, porcelain doll maker and leatherwork. She has won many awards and ribbons at the fair for her work.
Her most important work was raising her family. A quote from one of her daughters reads like this: "I remember mom's quick sense of humor. It is where I get my ability to laugh in life from. We would tease her about something and she would get her little grin and say "Oh you!" I remember her sitting at her sewing machine with me and teaching me how to sew. It's a skill that I have loved and that I have passed on to my daughters as well. I remember how hard she struggled and worked and saved to make sure that we had the money for school clothes. She has so many disrespectful teenagers but we never once did not know and feel that she loved us. She was like so many other wonderful mothers in the world that give their all to their kids without a second thought to themselves. Thank goodness for Mom! She was home for all of us. How is where your heart is, could very easily be replaced with, Home is where our mom is"
Towards the end of her life, she loved to watch the same tv series over and over, it had horses in it and she loved horses. She would still ask to go to her son Brian's home and ride his horse even though she could barely walk. She often asked about her children, especially those whom she had not seen in a long time. A wise mother was once asked which of her children she loved the most. Her answer, the one who was sick, or the one who was having trouble at home, or the one who needed help in school. That was like mom, she was always helping and blessing the lives of her children, and she goes on doing so by leaving us fond memories and a legacy of love. It becomes each of our responsibilities to live a life that will bring us again to embrace our mother and loved ones gone before. May we all do so with God's help.
