Richard (Dick) J. McDonald, born February 29, 1924, a World War II Veteran and beloved father, husband, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and dear friend, passed away peacefully at home on the evening of December 8th, 2016 of natural causes. He was 92 years of age but didn’t look it. We all liked to kid him that the secret to his youthful appearance, active lifestyle and sharp mind into his advanced years was due to the fact that he was really only “22” years old, since as a leap year baby he technically only had a birthday every four years.
He is survived by his three children, Ed (Judy) McDonald, Nancy (Steven) Ohlsen, David McDonald; his sister Ann Russell; six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was loved by many and will be dearly missed, but we are grateful he has been reunited with his dear wife Marie who he missed deeply since her passing 13 years earlier.
Dad sometimes had a rough exterior, perhaps befitting a tough World War II Navy man who served in the Boiler Room on a Naval Destroyer in the South Pacific, but inside was a kind and generous heart, a man who loved his family and the Gospel, and who with faith and dedication worked hard and served others tirelessly. He loved to golf and hit the links into his 90s. He had a knack for repair and fixing things and donated his expertise and experience countless times to those who needed help, all the while enjoying life and enriching the lives of those around him with his wit, humor and the sharing of the many stories of his life experiences. Dad, we love you. Good-bye until we meet again.
