His family lived in Hanksville, Utah for most of his growing up years. To attend high school, he would board with families living in Bicknell, Utah. He was elected student body president of Wayne County High School and graduated from there in 1950.
The following spring, he was working for his uncle in Wellington, Utah. The first day there, he met Lorraine Winn. A few months later, he took a job at a uranium mill at White Canyon, Utah, which is now under Lake Powell. Their courtship continued through letters. They were married on Sept. 26, 1951, in the Manti Utah Temple.
While working at the uranium mill, they lived in White Canyon and Durango, Colorado. They moved to Wellington, Utah where Nathen worked as a machine operator in the coal mines. Later, they moved to Taylorsville, Utah and he worked for the Wells House Moving Company. Eventually, they were able to buy a home and have lived there since that time. Nathen owned a mechanic shop for a few years, worked for IML Freight for 18 years, then worked for Maxway Trucking until he retired at age 86.
Nathen was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was very dedicated to his service within the church. He served as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake and Jordan River Temples for 30 years. He received the Silver Beaver award for his service with the Boy Scouts of America. He also served on the West Valley City Counsel.
Family was very important to Nathen. He spent all the time he possibly could with his family. He did countless hours of service for others, mostly without anyone’s knowledge. His favorite hymn was “Have I Done Any Good in the World Today” and that is how he lived his life. He left a legacy of service, kindness, patience, and a testimony of Jesus Christ.
