Katherine (Kay) Engle was born on 5-6-37 and left this earth on 3-17-21 to join her family who has gone on before her.
She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Frank and Hazel Barnes. She grew up with her two sisters Janet Rush (Dean) and Arlene Moerke (Duane) and one brother Richard (Mary) Barnes. She attended school in the Minneapolis area and graduated from Roosevelt High School. After graduation, she went with two girlfriends, Barbara and Kathleen to Florida. She often talked about that trip and had wonderful memories to look back on.
She met the love of her life Lowell Engle in Minneapolis and married him on December 19, 1959. Kay became a step-mother to Lowell’s three children- Terry Engle, Deb Rae Sandvik, and Doug Engle (Mary Jo). Kay and Lowell started their family together and shared three daughters – Becky Stowe (Garth), Sue VanZeben (Bob) and Shelly Wilden (Adam). Shelly passed away in 1995.
Kay and Lowell shared nine grandchildren. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. She was often found behind a video camera filming soccer, baseball, football and hockey games. She had great joy watching her two granddaughters participate in ice skating and soccer, and her great granddaughters dance and cheerleading teams. Her favorite game to play with her grandchildren was Croquet and she was a stickler for following the rules. She also enjoyed playing cards, reading, playing the piano, and swimming.
Kay worked for the Federal Government for many years. She was a secretary for both the Bureau and Reclamation and the Bureau of Land Management. She really enjoyed her co-workers and learning about the natural resources found in Utah.
Kay was a member of the St. Matthews church since 1969. She attended Atonement Lutheran church for many years and served as a Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school director, and a Girl Scout leader. When the churches combined their congregations, she met many new lifelong friends. She volunteered her time to the church faithfully until her health began to fail.
Kay and Lowell spent many winters in their motorhome in Yuma, Arizona. She loved her neighbors from Canada and enjoyed all the activities that were offered at the club house. After Lowell’s death in 2011, Kay continued to spend the winters in Arizona and traveled to Mexico many times while in Yuma.
Kay loved traveling the United States to visit friends and family every year. She and Lowell traveled in their fifth-wheel throughout the Midwestern states, Western states and even drove across Canada to visit Lowell’s sister in Alaska. She was a very good friend to many and loved hearing from all her friends and family with a Christmas card each year.
The family would like to express their gratitude to those people who helped Kay at her home the last few years. She will be missed by so many.
