He was the younger brother of Daniel V. Garber, Jr. Jim married Roxie Lee Gordon and together they had two daughters, Cherryl Ann and Danalee. Later divorced. He married the love of his life, Maribeth Montague Nielson on March 19, 1969 in Las Vegas, Nevada and became Papa Garber to her sons, Craig Dee and Randy Ivan Nielson. Jim and Maribeth were devoted to each other for 53 years. She preceded him in death on January 22, 2022.
Jim attended grade school in Hiawatha and high school at Wasatch Academy where he lettered in football, basketball and track, graduating in 1949. He attended Carbon College in Price, Utah 1949-50 and the University of Utah for three years, majoring in geology. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1950-1953, as a tail gunner on a B-29. He was Honorably Discharged in
1953. Jim had many talents and interests. He worked in the mines as young man. He was Assistant Vice President in Sales for Old Security Insurance Company. In his later years he was self employed. Jim spent many summers high up in the Uintah Mountains with Randy, prospecting and searching for gold. He loved the outdoors: hunting, fishing, boating at Lake Powell and other lakes around Utah. He loved taking his 1961 Jeep up to Ferron Mountain and other places in Utah, prospecting, looking for Indian ruins and geological artifacts. He was an expert carpenter, mechanic and could fix or build anything.
Jim was a proud member of the Shrine, Elks Club, American Legion and the Skyline Jeep Club.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Daniel V. Garber, Sr., mother, Myrtle Clark Garber, wife, Maribeth Garber, step-sons Craig Nielson, Randy Nielsen, son-in-law Greg Underhill, and special canine companion, “Samie Joe”.
He is survived by daughters, Cherryl Ann Underhill, Danalee Robinson (Larry), daughter-in-law, Kris Nielson, 4 grandchildren: Jessica Lee Adams (Mike), Buck McKay(Jenn), Tyler Robinson (Lynnae),
Jimmy Underhill (Chelsey), 13 great-grandchildren.
Private Graveside Service will be held at Valley View
Memorial Park on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 with Military
Honors. Internment: Valley View Memorial Park
