It is with heavy hearts and deep love that we announce the passing of our dear Husband, Dad, and Papa, Fred E. Kobel, who was called to his heavenly home on April 1, 2025. He passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family. Fred’s life was a testament to kindness, gentleness, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. His legacy of integrity, humor, wit, and wisdom will live in our hearts forever.
In his professional life, Fred enjoyed a successful and rewarding career as a mechanical engineer. He spent 26 years at Bethlehem Steel before the plant shut down in 1983. Fred then went to work at the West Valley Demonstration Project in West Valley, NY where he spent some of the most fulfilling years of his career. He retired after 15 years of service.
Never one to sit still, Fred’s retirement was full of trips, projects, and hobbies. He traveled to Switzerland (the birthplace of his parents), the Canadian Rockies, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. His favorite destination was Walt Disney World. He loved visiting the theme parks because no matter how old he was, they always made him feel like a kid again. Fred could design anything, build anything, or fix anything. He especially enjoyed home renovation projects. Fred’s favorite hobby was recording and preserving memories. He created a collection of 135 DVDs that will ensure our precious family memories last forever. Fred also loved boating. One of his proudest accomplishments was waterskiing at the age of 80.
Fred’s greatest joy was his family. He led not with words, but by example – demonstrating hard work, selflessness, and unconditional love. His deepest devotion was to his wife, Barbara, whose steadfast love and companionship was at the heart of their home. He found joy in life’s simplest moments, knowing that love, faith, and family were the true markers of a life well-lived.
Fred is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara (nee Strack), daughters Carolyn (David) Brown and Christie (Ryan) Labertew, four grandchildren, Emily (Zachary) Lofties, Hannah Brown, Faith Labertew, and Noah Labertew, and his sister, Ruth Downey.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025 at Revive Wesleyan in Hamburg, NY at 11 a.m.
