Hubert had farmed his entire working life beginning while just a boy with his father, Fred. At that time farming was done with horses or mules, and your own backbreaking physical labor.
Hubert was required to shorten his school day in 1945 when his father became disabled from Parkinson’s. At that time he became responsible for managing all that farming required at that point in time.
On August 22, 1954, he married Virginia Lee Howard, and she became his partner in farming the family farm. They began their family with the birth of a daughter, Lana (Danny Newport). The family continued to grow with the birth of Lyle (Susan Schock) and finally, Nile.
Hubert attended the Little Wabash United Methodist Church, where he was an active member. He and Virginia raised their family in this little country church. His faith was always a big part of his life. Hubert once remarked “in growing a crop today, I do approximately 2% of what is done to grow the crop, and 98% is left up to God.” Hubert served over 50 years as a member of the Edwards County Farm Bureau, and as a board member for over 20.
