Dear Friends & Family, 
We have so many wonderful memories of my Mom who recently passed away at 97.  She was described by me and my family as being devoted to her family and being fiercely independent (and you have probably already heard a story or two from me about that,  that made you laugh).  She was described by her recent medical caregivers even in her last week as being particularly sharp at 97-- which is a line she took great pride in and shared with her family often.  She is the person that taught me to care about politics and invest in positive change-- in fact after her and my Dad moved to Media, PA where I grew up, they joined the Democratic Committee in a highly Republican area and even inspired me to canvas door-to-door for George McGovern in high school.  She also took me to see Robert Kennedy speak in Drexel Hill, PA shortly before he was assassinated where I participated in the excitement of the crowd and was inches away from shaking his hand which is a memory I will always remember.  Mom was very caught up in day-to-day politics and was, of course, especially concerned recently (to put it mildly) with the (not our) current administration.  Even at her age she was a force to be reckoned with and tried to take days off from the news, but always returned disappointed and even more infuriated.  She stood for equal rights and equity for everyone to pursue their own dreams and beliefs and as long as no one was harmed in the process.  More recently, when I started planning our annual family reunions to celebrate her birthday in Florida in March, she would say that she might not be there next year so don't plan it-- but we did anyway, and just celebrated our 10th year of this family tradition to celebrate her.

It is because of her unrelenting spirit and civic-mindedness that my family has chosen the nonprofit 501(c)(3) "Democracy Forward" (see below) for you to make donations if you feel so inclined, in the memory of my inspirational Mom, Shirley Berkun.
