As I am remembering Sadie today & reminiscing about the special person she was and about the experiences we shared over some 40+ years, it’s so difficult to single out but a few of the wonderful memories I have.

Everyone knows Sadie had a passion for growing Orchids, and I share the love of these beautiful flowers with her.  Although she attempted to pass her secrets to growing them on to me, my skills pale in comparison to hers. Sadie just had a gift for growing and nurturing flowers & plants & vegetables.  I remember a visit to see Dad & Sadie in North Carolina one summer.  Mike & I arrived in time for lunch & Sadie took me into their garden where I helped gather everything we needed for an amazing summer salad of mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, asparagus & red onions, most of which I had never seen growing before! Since Mike & I moved to NC, I have picked Sadie’s brain on so many occasions for her tricks to growing everything from Strawberries to Spinach & Blueberries to Broccoli. Thanks to her we’ve some success!

Sadie & I also loved bird watching. I remember on my Saturday morning walks @ John Prince Park she introduced me to the abundant birdlife there.  Once, we adopted a family of what we pegged as purple coots until Sadie did the research to find that they were actually Gallinules. We continued to feed “Galli” & her little family every Sat for months.  Since moving to NC, Sadie & I enjoyed long conversations about the birdlife here & stories of her favorites from her birdwatching years in NC.  
We enjoyed baking together too.  I never got the hang of her famous Friendship Cake, but she did teach me how to make her German Chocolate Cake I taught her how to make “Ugly Sweater” cookies for the family Christmas party.
So many memories…I will miss all of these things and so much more about Sadie but she will always be in my heart until we meet again in Heaven. 

I was blessed to know her as a previous extended family member she took my 2boys to swimming lessons when they were very young and for that I am forever grateful, she was quite a super caring grandmother R.I.P Sadie

We will remember Sadie as one tough, kind lady who used her wit and intellect to live happily to almost 93. She nurtured people like she nurtured flowers her favorite being orchids. She never forgot to send beautiful cards to family and friends remembering their birthdays, anniversaries and all the special holidays. We loved Nana’s bananas from her backyard and especially her banana bread, friendship cake, carrot cake, and rum cake as well as her fresh North Carolina farmed green beans and pickled zucchini among other dishes that showed off her talents in the kitchen. We loved having dinner with her occasionally at First Presbyterian Church, the Olive Garden or at family gatherings. Our three children will never forget sharing Oreos together with Nana and Papa at school on the annual Grandparents Day. Maybe her secret to a long life was that she couldn’t sit still, keeping active with walking, biking, reading, socializing and computers and cell phones. She inspires us not to be afraid no matter the age or circumstances because of her deep faith in God. Thank you Sadie for your love! We will always love you!

I met Sadie at First Pres about 3 years ago. Not knowing anyone in the congregation, Sadie and her friend took me under their wings. Our bond became stronger each time we got together. Sadie was such an amazing woman who always doted on her family. I was blessed to have met Sadie and will cherish the times we had together. My Condolences to the family. God Bless 

You can measure the amount of Joy someone has given you during their life, by the amount of sadness you feel when they are gone. Tonight I am so very glad that Mom is spending Christmas Eve with Jesus and celebrating his birthday with him in Heaven. But Judging by the amount of pain and sadness that so many are experiencing tonight at her loss, it is obvious that she shared so much of her Love, and gave so much of her Joy, to so many. The joy she spread throughout the world during her 92 years of life has touched many lives. I know that the pain and sorrow everyone is feeling tonight is deeply raw and so very painful. But she would have wanted us to be happy for her. For tomorrow she is attending the biggest birthday party of them all, and singing Happy Birthday in person to Jesus.
