Obituary
Michael Scott Powell, 47, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021, in hospice surrounded by his family after a long struggle with cancer. A Wake will be held on Sunday, May 23, 2021, between 6-8 PM at Quattlebaum Funeral at 5411 Okeechobee Blvd. The Funeral Mass will be at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church on Monday, May 24, 2021, at 2:30 PM. Interment will follow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery; all who wish to attend are welcomed.
Scott was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and raised in Pensacola, Florida. He graduated from Pensacola Catholic High School Class of 1991, and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies from the University of West Florida. Scott valued the faith-based Catholic Education he received and began his teaching career at Cardinal Newman High School in the fall of 1996. In addition to teaching, Scott found great success as an assistant football coach with the encouragement and direction from many outstanding Newman coaches from 1997-2009 becoming one of Cardinal Newman's All-Newman Distinguished Coaches. Coach Powell also assisted with Weightlifting, Wrestling, and Golf. Scott was also an active leader and faculty mentor for many Newman student activities for youth ministry, including “March for Life” and yearly Emmaus retreats.
Scott went on to become the Social Studies Department Chair, the International Baccalaureate Program Coordinator, and Academic Dean. He most recently earned his Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from The University of Notre Dame, a tremendous highlight for both his personal and professional goals. He achieved that success with the support of his Cardinal Newman Family. Scott was a mentor, role model and friend to everyone he encountered and was loved and respected by all his colleagues and students.
Pallbearers include his brothers, David and John Powell, David Bayardelle, Wes Logsdon, Anup Sinha, and Jay Lower.
Scott Powell is preceded in death by his Grandmother, Alvenia Glover, and his mother, Nancy Powell.
Scott Powell is survived by his two brothers David and John Powell and wife Tammy Powell, and the enormous Cardinal Newman family and Alumni from a blessed 25-year profession he truly loved.
In lieu of flowers the family requests, memorial donations be made to Cardinal Newman High School Michael Scott Powell Memorial Scholarship Fund.
