Maureen Christine (Fahey) Sullivan – (May 6, 1942 to Oct 28, 2022) – daughter of John B. Fahey Sr. and Mary Q. Fahey, passed away peacefully at home on Oct 28, 2022. Her unexpected passing will forever leave a hole in the hearts of her family and friends.
Maureen was born and raised in Torrington, CT, where she was a member of the Girl Scouts, a camp counselor, and a high school cheerleader. She graduated from St. Joseph's College in Emmitsburg, MD (Class of 1964). Her taste for travel began when spending a semester abroad at the University of Laval in Quebec, Canada.
As a proud mother, Maureen raised her six children in New York and Connecticut, where she followed her children's activities, was involved in local politics, and readily hosted a spaghetti dinner for a crowd. Maureen generously opened her home to family and exchange students but would also enjoy chatting on the beach in Clinton and playing cards for hours. Later, Maureen moved to Litchfield, CT, to run Fahey Travel. After her children had grown, she embarked on a second career that she loved as a flight attendant for the Delta Connection (ASA). This career allowed Maureen to combine her love of travel and making friends worldwide. Maureen maximized her time off for adventures. Upon retiring from the airline business, Maureen settled in West Palm Beach, FL, where she could be found coordinating social activities and helping neighbors.
As an avid traveler until the end, she recently renewed her passport, asking for extra pages to be sure she had enough space for her ambitious plans. Many would consider her trips a 'trip of a lifetime', but she was always nonchalant and thought it was part of the fun. Some of her adventures included: being an ambassador for the Tall Ships in Bermuda, witnessing gondola races in Venice, participating in crazy road trips through Costa Rica, taking yoga and cooking classes in Italy, dining in the White House, helping friends with the Miss Iceland Pageant, being a regular groupie of The Platters in Las Vegas and visiting family and friends around the world. Needless to say, Maureen was a dynamo who would frequently lend a helping hand and do it in such a way that she gained a lifelong friend in the process.
She was known to have a crossword puzzle with her at all times and could often be found completing the NY Times Sunday crossword in ink! She was a voracious reader and knew the staff at all the local libraries.
If you had the opportunity to meet her, you knew she was fun and ready for anything. Supportive of friends and charities by donating her time and positive energy, she remained young at heart and in spirit, constantly challenging herself to learn and keep up with the latest technology. She had a story for every occasion and could put anyone at ease with a quick chat.
Maureen is survived by her children, Elizabeth Kupcinskas of Massachusetts, Eileen Lippert of South Carolina, Emmett Sullivan of Connecticut, Michaela Yasin of Switzerland, and Lawrence Sullivan of North Carolina. Sisters Kathy Schjelderup of Norway, Eileen Gardener of Arizona, and sisters-in-law Kate Fahey and Irene Fahey, both of Connecticut and the nine grandchildren she loved dearly, Kerry, Eric, Catherine, Christopher, Layla, Red, Aidas, Eliana, and Zaid, as well as
many nieces and nephews. She recently welcomed her first great-granddaughter, Eliza. Maureen was predeceased by her parents, daughter Kate Kingberger, brothers John Fahey Jr., and Tom Fahey, and sister Jane Fahey.
Two Celebrations of Life will be held for Maureen since she has many friends in many places. The first celebration will be December 30th in West Palm Beach, FL, with one in Connecticut next summer. Details for both events to follow as they become available.
She will be immensely missed. May she rest in the peace of Heaven, and may we live better lives for having known Maureen and her goodness.
