He graduated from Lake Worth High and attended Palm Beach Community College, earning a degree in food management. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years. During the Vietnam War George was a culinary specialist on the USS Stonewall Jackson SSBN-634 and other submarines. As a night baker, his shipmates fondly remembered him for his pumpkin pies and sticky buns. Following active duty he joined the Naval Reserves where he achieved his much sought after E-9 rank.
George was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years, retiring in 2005 as a mailing standards specialist. He enjoyed working with customers and was well respected by his peers. After retirement George served as a poll worker on Election days.
He is survived by Ellen, his loving wife of 32 years, and his two daughters Bonnie Hoyt and Aimee Birtsch (Richard). He was a devoted husband and father, and with Ellen was involved in all of the girls’ afterschool and weekend activities. George chaperoned many Girl Scout camping trips and helped sell Girl Scout cookies during their annual sale, enjoying many Thin Mints in the process.
George will always be remembered for cooking the traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings every Thanksgiving. He enjoyed traveling, cooking family meals and collecting first day covers.
He was a dedicated member of the USSVI South Florida Base, a submarine veterans group he joined in 2003. He was always supportive in the activities of the association and attended numerous submariner reunions and conventions.
Surviving family members include: brothers David Hoyt and Charles Hoyt (Carol), sister Sue Huffman (Harold), and many other loving relatives. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Ann Hoyt.
He was well known for his great sense of humor, positive attitude and likeable personality. He was incredibly kind, considerate and always willing to help others. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
According to his wishes, his remains will be laid to rest at sea.
The family will receive visitors at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Quattlebaum Funeral, Cremation and Event Center, 5411 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach, FL 33417. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m.
