Alvin Pius, passed away this morning at Jupiter Medical Center at age 89. Alvin, Al, Papa and Poppy; a man who loved all and was loved by all wore a genuine smile and stood quick to greet you with a hug and a kiss. He served his country during WWII as a member of the 509 Parachute Infantry Battalion. Also known as the “Geronimo’s”, they were the first battalions of parachutists fielded by the American Army and one of only four independent airborne battalions in U.S. Military history. Al received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his courageous acts.
Al was very proud of his service to his country but nothing compared to the love he had for his family and friends.
He was born and raised in NY, where he met the woman he would marry and adore for 65 years. Al was a kind, caring father to his two children Shelley and Randy. He loved spending time with them and shared his passion for fishing, which they all did quite often. He was a proud grandpa to his grandchildren Kate, Rachael and Max, and took much joy in watching them grow up and in being an important part of their lives.
Al and Phyllis spent their retirement years in Florida where they moved 25 years ago. Aside from fishing, Al also loved to golf, and to just be around people.
He will truly be missed by his family and good friends.
Al is survived by his wife Phyllis, children Shelley Melanson and Randy , three grandchildren Kate Melanson, Rachael and Max Pius, daughter-in-law Cindy Pius and son-in-law Paul Melanson
Services will be held this Friday at South Florida National Cemetery at 6501 State Route 7 in Lake Worth, at 1:15 PM with an Honor Guard unit to provide the final salute.
