

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alberto Adolfo Arias, a beloved philanthropist, world traveler, and passionate lover of nature and the arts. Alberto passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025 at the age of 73.
Born in Panama City, Panama on November 20, 1951, he attended and graduated from the University of Costa Rica where he majored in Psychology.
He would go on to settle in Miami, FL where he found his first life’s passion in supporting the Health Crisis Network (HCN), the first AIDS service organization in South Florida. Alberto started as a volunteer in 1989, taking patients to appointments and bringing them to HCN. A year later, he was appointed Hotline Coordinator. The hotline was a lifeline to people living with HIV who were living in fear and isolation and dying too soon. A caller was lucky if when they called, they heard, “Hello, this is Alberto. How can I help you?” He loved being the hotline coordinator and he was beloved by all the staff and volunteers at HCN. Alberto lived a life dedicated to uplifting people living with HIV.
Alberto was known for his generosity, warmth, and dedication to making the world a better place. Throughout his life, he was a tireless supporter of numerous charitable causes, believing that the key to a fulfilled life was giving to others. His philanthropic endeavors touched countless lives, leaving a legacy of kindness and compassion.
In 2017, Alberto and his beloved husband, David Wood Kinnard, were honored with the Community Service Award at the National LGBTQ Task Force Gala in Miami. They, along with singer Gloria Estefan, were commended for their extensive activism and philanthropy across a broad range of social justice, social service, and arts organizations. They are widely recognized as angels to this community to this day.
Alberto’s love for adventure led him to travel the world extensively, experiencing diverse cultures, cuisines, and landscapes. His travels often inspired his passions and were evident in his stunning garden in West Palm Beach, where he cultivated a truly exotic jungle. Among his most cherished hobbies were his aviaries, home to hundreds of birds from around the globe, which brought him immense joy and a sense of tranquility.
A true connoisseur of the finer things in life, Alberto had a deep appreciation for opera, classical music, ballet and fine dining. He was a frequent patron of opera houses and concert halls all over the world, often attending performances of his favorite composers and sharing his passion with friends and loved ones. His refined taste was matched only by his warm and engaging personality, making him a cherished guest at any gathering.
Alberto is survived by his husband, David Wood Kinnard, and siblings, Maruja Arias, Jose Raul Arias, Angela Ines Arias, Cecilia Arias, Marianella Arias. He was preceded in death by Francisco Arias and Pachis Arias. His family and friends will remember him as a man who lived life with purpose, grace, and a zest for beauty in all its forms.
A memorial service to celebrate his life was held on April 12th at his home and gardens in West Palm Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Miami City Ballet or Equality Florida. reflecting Alberto’s lifelong commitment to philanthropy and giving.
