Don leaves his son Larry and daughter-in-law Susan; beloved grandchildren David and Blake; sister-in-law Shirley and nieces and nephews and many friends. Don is pre-deceased by his soul mate and wife of 57 years Florence (Vickers) Stevens and by siblings Bill and Jean.
Born and raised in East York Ontario, Don was the son of William and Margaret (Brown) Stevens. Don had a strong affinity for both the Borough of East York and for Scarborough which he made his home from 1959 until his passing.
Don’s formative years were spent proudly helping his father with his Dad’s coal and ice business until the introduction of low priced home refrigerators effectively eliminated the ice business. Don then worked a very short time for Massey-Harris and a small company before starting with the Borough of East York as a waste management worker.
Don was proud of his East York community and worked hard to earn his way from being a “sanitation engineer” to the position of 1st Foreman for the Sanitation Department. He took pride in the honest hard work of waste management that helped the residents of East York.
Don and his wife Florence enjoyed supporting the local Sea Cadet Corps, (RCSCC Scarborough), through auxiliary support and driving many miles over the years to ferry his son and others to events. Don was at peace when visiting a family cottage through parts of the 1960’s and 1970’s where again the honest hard physical work of the day was rewarded by catching fish in the twilight hours and playing cards with family in the evening.
The one constant throughout Don`s life was his love of his family. He delighted in participating in his son`s life and then his grandchildren`s lives and cherished each phase of their growth that he felt blessed to witness.
Don always had an ear to listen and a story to tell. His unwavering desire to help others smile or laugh was a trait that uplifted him and everyone he touched.
In honour of Don a visitation / celebration of his life will be held Saturday March 4 2017 10:00AM to 12:00 noon whereupon immediate and extended family can attend a private burial. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Ontario Lung Association is appreciated.
