When the CP-Air flight from Amsterdam descended into Malton Airport (now Toronto Pearson Int'l), on Friday afternoon before the long weekend in May '69, Barbara didn't know she was going to have a houseguest, who would occupy her couch in their one-bedroom apartment in the Trillium on Woodbine at O'Connor, that night and for four weeks thereafter.

Thank you Barb, for not hanging up on me when I called, even though I couldn't speak English and just said that 'I was here'  in German.   I wouldn't have known where to go or what to do; I had no plan B.  Likely would have spent my first night in Canada on a bench at the airport or in a homeless shelter, for that's what I was on that faitful day, homeless.  

Instead you sent Ted to pick me up, in a brand-new white 1969 Mustang.  I thought I ended up in a Hollywood movie.   Got to spend 'Victoria Day' weekend in Algonquin Park, you and Ted and another couple, and me in between,  in a hot and humid tent, too small for five people.  Learned that spring is very short in Canada, perhaps a week?  Went fishing with Ted in the rain.  Just as well I didn't catch any, for I wouldn't have known what to do with it.  The mosquitoes and blackflies must have had a good time though.  You could have heard them laughing all the way across the lake.  They had a feast.

The next few weeks went by in a whirlwind.  Exploring Toronto, in particular Yonge Street from top to bottom with Ted were exhausting but a lot of fun.  Many first's  never been in a pool hall before, let alone a steam bath or having a rare steak in a downtown restaurant at midnight, but you knew you couldn't let this go on for too long.  

After about two weeks you put your foot down, 'Enough with that nonsense', and I can hear your voice to this day.  You had decided that it was high time for me to learn English, so I could get a job (and, needless to say, get out of your house).   So, I did, start English lessons, while washing dishes, with you:  This is a knife, a fork, as spoon, a plate, a table, a chair, a house, a mouse, etc, etc.  Eventually I learned whole sentences, like, "Let's have some tea.  Why don't you put the kettle on, Paukie".   

You were an excellent teacher and I present myself as proof, for I never had or needed another English lesson for the rest of my life; and I spent 30 years as a college teacher.   You were just five years older than I but you were like a mother to me.  Can't thank you enough.  You were my GUARDIAN ANGEL, when I needed one, and I NEEDED ONE that day, 48 years ago this week.

God bless you and keep you close, so you can watch over your family and perhaps (if you have time), keep an eye out for any ignorant young immigrants, who are more bold and adventureous (or should I say careless) then they have common sense. I will never forget you, and BTW, if you read this, any mistakes I made in spelling or grammar are, of course, entirely my own fault  hahahaa..haa...aaa.


P. S.  A great big thanks to Teddy for keeping this page open.  I may have never 'found' your mom, although I wish I hadn't, not this way.  I could have gone on thinking she's out there, somewhere.  But then again, perhaps she is  in spirit.  In fact I'm sure of it.

Your mom was such an important part of my teenage years.   She was like a second mom and constantly encouraged me to "get out there" and not be so shy.  I have such fond memories of her (and your dad) spontaneously dancing in the basement, belting out karaoke and always being one step ahead of your mastermind plans.  I credit her reference with getting my first teaching position, and have always been grateful for her support.  She believed that "You teach who you are", which explains why she touched so many young lives in such a positive way.  She was such a vibrant person who lit up the room. My heart is sad for a friend who left us too soon.  Barb and I saw each other occasionally and it was always welcomed.  She asked me one time if I could arrange a doubles tennis match.  I got a couple of my friends to play and asked them to be kind as she was not an avid player. Well, she was way better than I thought and I admired her atheletic skills. Barb was spirited and interesting to talk to.  My sympathies to her family as it is a huge loss.

Barb's joie de vivre and unwavering sunny outlook were, and will continue to be, an inspiration to me.  People say that it's always good to be around a happy person.  We all know that life throws us hard knocks, but Barb always seemed to make the choice to be happy anyway.  I can only guess and hope that this wonderful legacy will live on in her loved ones, even though I'm sure she will be sorely missed.  Love you, Barb.

Barb was an inspiration to me as both a teacher and as a coach. She helped me in my first year as a grade 3 teacher, when I didn't really know what I was doing.
