William G. White of Harwichport, Massachusetts and Naples, Florida died Tuesday November 18th at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston following a brief illness. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts September 17, 1924, the son of the late Francis Arthur White and the late Lorraine (née Maroney), he was raised in Springfield’s Holy Name Parish, where he ran the newspaper concession stand and served as an altar boy. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1943 and served as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps in the European theater. Returning from the war, he played second base for the Jewish Veterans baseball team before attending Providence College, Boston College Law School and Suffolk Law School, from which he received his JD. In Springfield, he enjoyed a 45--‐year trial practice, primarily with the law firm of Ryan and White.
During the 1960s he also served as City Solicitor for Springfield, head of Post 21 of the American Legion and head of the Springfield Redevelopment Authority. He chaired several political and charitable campaigns and served as trustee of The Elms College. An avid sports enthusiast, he played golf, coached Little League baseball teams and was a devoted Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He was also an active member of Holy Cross Parish in Springfield.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia (née Brophy) and his six children: Christopher (wife Anne), Maureen (husband Steven Rattner), Thomas (wife Paula), Mark, Timothy (wife Lise) all residing in New York and John (wife Peggy Galeb) of San Francisco, along with seventeen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, November 22 at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church, Route 28, in West Harwich, Massachusetts. The family requests that friends join them for visiting time between 9:30 and 10:30 AM, before Mass. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, all donations be directed to the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, 577 Carew Street and to Holy Trinity Church, West Harwich.
