William R. “Bill” Benedict 73 passed away Saturday, August 13th, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Worcester son of the late Helen and Samuel Benedict, and was predeceased by his sister Suzanne Joslyn. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Margaret (Smith) BENEDICT, by his daughter Sheila Golden, his son Brian, and his son Daniel and his wife Julie. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, his nephews Timothy and Donald Joslyn, his nieces Cathleen Groleau and Sharon Trigiano. Brother in Law Donald Joslyn Sr., Cousins Elizabeth Quinn and Michael Lang. His sister in law Suzanne Mallaghan, her husband Edward and their children Rory Mallaghan and Brianne Spellane, sister in law Debora Smith, and brother in law, John Smith.
He graduated from North High School and received his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Westfield State College. He was a proud member of the U.S. Navy, serving with the SeaBee Division during the Cuban crisis. He was a member of the Worcester Police Department for 35 years retiring as a Detective Sergeant from the Domestic Assault Division. For many years he was in charge of the Worcester Police Color Guard, and was also a member of the Police Pipes and Drums of Worcester, MA.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, August 17th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 260 Main Street, West Harwich, MA 02671. A Mass to celebrate Bill’s life will be held on Thursday, August 18th at 11 AM at Holy Trinity Church, 246 Main Street, West Harwich, MA 02671. Burial will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Ave., Bourne, MA 02532 for 1:15 p.m..
