She was the wife of the late James D. Gordon, who passed away in June, 2006. They had been married for 63 years and Ruth joined him on the day before their 68th anniversary.
She was predeceased by her beloved grandson Michael James Knapp of Harwich, and her sister Jeannette Lanoue of Marstons Mills.
Born in Quincy, Ruth graduated from the Woodward School for Girls, and raised her family in Lexington , where she worked in the school system as a tutor and at the National Heritage Museum. After retirement, she and Jim moved to Cape Cod and lived at Popponesset Beach in Mashpee, before moving to Brewster. For many years they wintered in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.
She is survived by her daughter Martha Knapp and her husband Doug along with their son Christopher of Harwich; Daughter Carol Goldthwait and her husband Bill of Lexington; Brother Ralph Durgin and his wife Kathleen of Eastham; and many nieces and nephews.
First and foremost, she loved her family and friends. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, playing cards, swimming, sailing, and being outdoors.
Ruth was cherished for her sense of adventure, her love of life, her quick wit and sense of humor which never failed her. Many people will hold dear their own wonderful memories of her amazing spirit, which is a genuine testament to a life well lived.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 3rd at the First Congregational Church on Main Street in Harwich Center.
