Mary J. Bates, age 83, of Dennis Port, formerly of Stoughton passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on May 16, 2024, after a period of failing health. She was the devoted wife of Frederick D. Bates who predeceased her in 2020. The daughter of Lawrence and Dorothy Doyle, Mary was born in Boston and grew up on Mission Hill. Mary and Fred raised their family in Stoughton before they retired in Dennis Port.
Mary was a homemaker while raising her children. She later worked at the Stoughton Middle School, Hugs Plus, and The Kids Space at Haemonetics due to her love of children. While at The Kids Space, Mary received the Janice Hill Teacher of the Year Award. She was a faithful and devout Catholic and communicant of St. James Church in Stoughton and Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich. Mary will be remembered for her love of family and friends, being a great cook and hostess, and as someone people could count on for guidance and comfort.
Mary treasured her family and friends and leaves behind her daughter Dottie Bates Fulginiti and her husband Gerry of Easton, her sons Danny and his wife Debby of Foxboro, Stephen and his wife Lori of Stoughton, Jimmy and his wife Caryn of Mystic CT, her grandchildren Richard, Danielle, Joe, Tyler, Devin, Taryn, Jarrod, Victoria, Sydney and Morgan and her great-grandchildren Cameron, Cali Rose, Cason, and Everly. She is survived by her sister Frances, and her husband Paul Clark, brother-in-laws Thomas O’Connor and Kenneth Hammond, sister-in-law Janet Kennedy, and many nieces and nephews in the US and Canada.

Visiting hours in the Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 260 Main St. (Route 28), West Harwich, MA 02671, on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The procession will gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 9 a.m., followed by an 10 a.m. Funeral Mass at Holy Trinity Church. Burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
