John William Dunbar, 72, of Harwich Port, Massachusetts, husband of 51 years to Carole (Peters) Dunbar died Monday, February 22, 2010 at Liberty Commons in Chatham, Massachusetts following a long battle with emphysema.
Born March 31, 1937, son of the late John W. Dunbar and Sarah (Patterson) Dunbar, John was raised in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He entered the U.S. Coast Guard in 1956 and was stationed in Chatham until 1961. John and Carole married in 1958 at the East Harwich United Methodist Church, where he was a member, and raised their family in Harwich. He was a master carpenter for over 40 years.
An avid sports fan, John enjoyed cheering on the Red Sox, Patriots (as long as they were winning!) and just about any other sports game on TV. John coached for many years in the Harwich youth hockey and baseball programs. He was a Boy Scout leader in Troop 77 in E. Harwich. Many camping trips with family and friends throughout New England as well as trips to Vermont brought John great pleasure. Spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren, and reading were John’s greatest joys.
He is survived by his wife, Carole Dunbar of Harwich; two children, Lisa Dunbar-Link and her wife Sharon of Peabody, MA and Keith Dunbar and his wife Libby (Ramsdell) Dunbar of Essex, VT; three grandchildren, Paige and Chase Dunbar of Essex, VT and Ivalee Dunbar-Link of Peabody, MA. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Becky (Dunbar) Shomo of Youngstown, Ohio, and infant son John W. Dunbar Jr.
A Memorial Honor Service will be held on Thursday, February 25, from 5-8 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in West Harwich, MA. Graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to Beacon Hospice, 259 Willow St., Yarmouth Port, MA 02675 or The Family Pantry, 133 Queen Anne Rd., Harwich, MA 02645.
