Walter J. (Bud) Carlson peacefully passed away on December 6, 2021 with family at his side. Bud was born on September 6, 1928 to Catherine (Reimer) and Walter O. Carlson in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Bud spent his youth in Robbinsdale and attended Wayzata (Minnesota) High School where he met his future wife, Jeanne, while acting in a school play.
After proudly serving in the US Army in Japan following WWII, Bud returned to Minnesota and married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne, whom he loved every day for the next 71 years.
Together, Bud and Jeanne raised three daughters, Rozamond, Vicki, and Elizabeth. Bud and Jeanne loved to travel. Together they visited four continents, exploring the world by ship, plane, train, bus, car, barge, and on foot. Their travels often included golfing on beautiful courses but they always looked forward to returning to their favorite golf courses at Des Moines Golf and Country
Club, where they were members for nearly 50 years. When he wasn’t golfing, Bud also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and flying. He was proud to be an early partner of Casey’s General Stores and enjoyed watching the company grow even after he retired. After stepping down as Secretary/Treasurer, Bud and Jeanne moved to Naples, Florida, where he continued to golf, fly, and enjoy many wonderful local restaurants. Not content to sit back in retirement, Bud became involved in banking, and actively served on BANK’s Board of Directors for 16 years, until his death. Bud was a true patriarch, leading his family with love and endless support. Our Papa was a great and thoughtful man and will be deeply missed.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Walter, brother, Tom, wife, Jeanne, daughter, Nancy, and a premature infant.
Left to honor and cherish Bud’s memory are his daughters Rozamond Hemberger (Jim), Vicki Wurst (Larry), and Elizabeth Brennan (Scott); grandchildren, Anna Reid (Shawn), Tyler Wurst, Peter Hemberger, Lindsay Berger, Jessa Mittman (Eric), Emily Argo (Brad), Corey Wurst, Tiffany Wurst, Alexandra Brennan, and Joseph Brennan (Molly); and great-grandchildren, Lachen Reid, Aksel Reid, Jonah Mittman, Fredrik Hemberger, Eliza Mittman, Ivy Hemberger, Livia Berger, Hudson Argo, Ruth Mittman, and August Hemberger; and sister, Marnie Fonder.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 9, 2021 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 1020 24th Street in West Des Moines followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Masks are required. Burial will be at Jordan Cemetery in West Des Moines after the service.
In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to the church where Bud and Jeanne started their life together: Wayzata Community Church (125 Wayzata Boulevard East, Wayzata, MN 55391).
