With deep sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Susan Fenwick Stalvey, aged 87, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Susan peacefully left this earthly realm on July 15, 2023, after bravely battling kidney disease for many years.
Born on November 26, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, to William and Florence Fenwick, Susan lived a remarkable life filled with both joyous and challenging moments. Throughout her journey, she displayed grace and unwavering determination in facing life's trials.
After graduating from Redford High School in 1952, Susan embarked on a journey to California to pursue a career in modeling while working as an executive secretary with the California Medical Association. Susan's proudest moment was when she was crowned Miss Date Crop at the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival during her time in Palm Desert, California. It was in California that Susan met Richard M. Stalvey, and together, they were united in matrimony. Though their paths later diverged, they both remained devoted to their children, Christopher and Jenifer.
Susan was a longtime resident of Washington, D.C., where she worked for many years as the church secretary at Christ Church on Massachusetts Avenue until her retirement in 2000. In 2003, Susan moved to Easton, Maryland, to be closer to her daughter, Jenifer. She resided in Easton until her recent illness, after which she relocated to Des Moines, Iowa, to be closer to her family.
Susan took immense pride in her son Christopher, who became a doctor, and she celebrated his achievements with enthusiasm. She frequently sought his advice on her own health matters, placing great trust in his opinion.
Despite facing numerous challenges, Susan's most significant accomplishment was being a devoted mother and advocate for her disabled daughter, Jenifer. With boundless love and care, Susan provided unwavering support, and Jenifer thrived under her attentive guidance. Together with her longtime friend and companion Lee Allen, they shared wonderful moments dining out at fine restaurants, forming cherished friendships with chefs and staff. Susan, Lee, and Jenifer also enjoyed exploring the shops and boutiques in the picturesque towns along the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Susan's heart overflowed with love for her grandchildren, Matthew and Catherine, whose laughter and presence brought immense joy to her days. She eagerly prepared for their visits, delighting in surprising them with treats. Every moment spent with them was treasured.
Susan is survived by her loving children, Christopher Fenwick Stalvey and Jenifer Elizabeth Stalvey; grandchildren Matthew James Stalvey and Catherine Fenwick Stalvey; sister-in-law Barbara Fenwick; former daughter-in-law Melissa Jost Stalvey; lifelong friend Lee Allen; and numerous friends and family. Preceding her in death were her parents, William and Florence Fenwick; her grandparents, Hazel & Roy Jennings and Nellie Brink (née) & William Fenwick; her former husband, Richard M. Stalvey; and her brother, William Fenwick.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to all the staff at Kavanagh House, EveryStep Hospice, and The Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center for the compassionate and loving care provided to Susan during her final months. Your kindness will forever be remembered.
Funeral services will be held at a later date at McLaren's Resthaven in West Des Moines, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Susan's memory to The Benedictine School in Ridgely, Maryland (www.benschool.org, 14299 Benedictine Lane, Ridgely, Maryland 21660).
Rest in peace, dear Susan. Your light will forever shine upon us.
