Steven Carl Witmer

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines, Iowa. The funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on August 9, 2024, at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel as well. Following the funeral services, Steven will be interred at McLaren’s Resthaven Mausoleum in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Steven was born on July 15, 1970, to Jerry and Janann (Peterson) Witmer in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up on his family’s farm in Grimes, Iowa, and he attended school in the Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District. He later graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, in May 1995 with his B.A. in Secondary History Education and then in 2018 with an M.A. in School Library Studies. On June 10, 1995, in Des Moines, Iowa, Steven married his love of his life Linda (Green) Green-Witmer, who he met while at the University of Northern Iowa. In August 2018, Steven became the Teacher Librarian for the Saydel Community School District, Saydel Iowa, where he excelled at exciting young minds about the library and books. Being a true book lover and teacher librarian, Steven ran a Go-Fund-Me campaign so that he could provide a book to each Pre-K and Kindergarten student at the Saydel CSD, as he believed that a child should have their own book. Steven was also known to give children books as he was walking through the various hospitals where he had his appointments, and each book noted that it was from That Library Guy.

Steven is survived by his wife of 29 years Linda (Green) Green-Witmer, who loves and misses him very much. He is also survived by his father Jerry Witmer of Urbandale, Iowa, and his two brothers Michael (Julie) Witmer of Urbandale, Iowa, and David (Debra) Witmer of Des Moines, Iowa. He is survived many nieces and nephews as well. Finally, Steven is survived by his loving cat, Chester.

Steven was preceded in death by his mother Janann (Peterson) Witmer, in addition to his grandparents Roy and Hazel (Johnson) Witmer, and Roland and Frances (Sparks) Peterson. Steven was also preceded in death by his darling cat, Fanny May.
