Roy Carl Johnson, 96, departed Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Des Moines Veteran’s Administration Hospice. Funeral services will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time.
Roy was born October 5, 1922 in Albert City, IA. He served in WWII for the Army Air Corps as a First Lieutenant. Roy piloted a B-25 bomber on 40 successful missions over the Alps and Brenner Pass. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star, Air Medal, and Purple Heart.
Roy received his bachelor’s degree from the Buena Vista University and his master’s degree from Purdue University. He spent the majority of his career in education as a physics and math teacher and principal.
Roy is survived by his wife of 72 years, Janice (Gibbons) Johnson, son, Randall Roy Johnson; daughter, Elise (Paul) Cousineau; grandchildren, Trevor Johnson, Taralyn (Noah) Iseton, and Lyssa (Joseph) Naron; great grandchildren, Sid, Suri, Sweden, and Sya; and one brother, Don Johnson.
