Robert (Bob) George Schmidt, 93, passed away Monday, October 4, 2021 at Kennybrook Village in Grimes, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 7, 2021 at McLaren's Chapel in West Des Moines, Iowa. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Bob was born February 22, 1928 in Des Moines to George and Margaret Schmidt. He was a proud graduate of Des Moines East High School. Bob served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge from the Marines, he married Juanita in 1954. Bob and Juanita were married for 60 years. In 1956, they built the family home. He loved the house that they physically built themselves. Family gatherings were held there for 60 years. Bob worked as a union carpenter. He owned Des Moines Millwork, eventually becoming a contractor for U.S. West. During his ownership of Des Moines Millwork, he helped build the altar used by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Iowa. Some of his other carpentry contributions include the federal judges’ benches at the U.S. District Courthouse in Des Moines and bookcases at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch, Iowa. Bob always put others before himself in life. Many weekends were spent remodeling and repairing the homes of friends and family. His hobbies were work and the sporting activities of his children and grandchildren. He never missed any of his children or granddaughter's (Daryan) sporting events. He loved his family and helping others. Bob was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Bob is survived by his sons, Rick (Kim) and Mike (Erin); grandchildren, Daryan Schmidt, Gage, Evan and Drew Schmidt, Caroline and Jack Klinge, Kelcie and Joe Riesterer and many other family members. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita; two brothers and two sisters.
