Arthur and Clarice Overton welcomed Robert, their third son, on August 9, 1940 in Des Moines. Robert spent much of his childhood growing up in our beloved Commerce, Iowa. He enlisted in the Army and spent his time in Germany, of which he spoke of often. He told us most recently of building a bridge for a visiting president.
Robert married Patricia Jean and they welcomed three daughters, Suzanne, Melody and Robin. He worked hauling garbage while studying at home to become a mechanic and ended up spending his working years with West Des Moines schools as head mechanic and later as bus driver before he retired. Later in retirement, he worked at West Des Moines human services helping where needed, driving clients to appointments, packaging goods, just being Bob, being a dad and stepping in where he was needed. Robert still lived on his own and shared many traditional (to us) home cooked meals with his family. He enjoyed the Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers and lately the U.S. Women’s soccer team. Robert also enjoyed games: board games, card games and cribbage.
Robert is preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and Raymond, and sister, Marianne. He is survived by his three daughters, grandchildren, and many dear friends. We love you pops!
