Bob was born August 26, 1917 in Algona, Iowa to Earl and Olive Smith. He was a Carpenter and Home Builder and a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran. Bob was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Des Moines and served as Council President several times, was head usher, involved with the Men’s Group, built a library cabinet and communion rail for the Church and a children’s altar for the Sunday School and was head cook for many church dinners. He was also a member of the former Lutheran Brotherhood. Bob was devoted to his family and Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting and a well-built home.
Bob is survived by his son, Norman (Elizabeth) Smith of Madison, Maine; two daughters, Barbara Maier of Urbandale and Irene (John) Thomas of Norwalk; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Eva Smith and three brothers, Fernley, Everett and Ralph.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McLaren’s Chapel.
